The Island of Crete is included in the study for the enormous importance of its landscape;
the island is known to be the largest in Greece with miles of unspoilt beaches and to be the destination of
about 3 million tourists per year.
The island is home of several rivers, caves and gorges, among these the most important is
Samaria Gorge (16 km long) which became National Park due to the presence of some protected species of animals
as the Kri-Kri and the Wild Goat.
About 50% of the Cretan population lives along the coastal area and here develop the main tourist and
livelihood of the population itself activities.
